How to Create a Home Alone-Inspired Christmas at Home
There are Christmas movies we watch every year, and then there are Christmas movies that basically designed an entire holiday aesthetic for us.
Home Alone is absolutely one of those.
The McCallister house has become almost as iconic as the movie itself. Deep reds. Tartan plaid. Greenery everywhere. Brass candlesticks. Velvet. Warm lighting. A Christmas tree that looks collected instead of coordinated within an inch of its life.
It feels festive without feeling trendy.
And maybe that's why we're still obsessed with it more than 30 years later.
I recently put together an entire Home Alone-inspired Christmas collection on Amazon filled with pieces I would use to recreate that warm, traditional 90s Christmas feeling at home.

Start With the Home Alone Christmas Color Palette

You don't need movie props to get the look. The magic is really in the palette:
Christmas red + forest green + tartan + warm wood + brass + candlelight.
The McCallister house doesn't feel like it was decorated from one matching Christmas collection. It feels like a family accumulated beautiful pieces over years.
That's exactly what I would try to recreate.
Instead of buying twenty versions of the same ornament, start with several strong foundational pieces and layer from there.
Shop the foundation:
SHOP THE EDDIE BAUER PLAID THROW
Those few pieces alone can completely change the feeling of a room.

The Living Room: Velvet, Tartan and Candlelight

If I were recreating the McCallister Christmas look, the living room is where I'd spend most of my energy.
And here's the trick:
You don't need Christmas decor covering every surface. Use textiles to establish the look first.
A deep red velvet curtain immediately gives you that rich traditional feeling. Then add tartan through a throw or a few pillows.
Suddenly, your everyday furniture starts participating in Christmas too.
My living room picks:
Red Velvet Curtains
These are one of my favorite finds in the entire collection because they're not technically Christmas decor. You can completely change the mood of a room without adding another figurine to a shelf.
Tartan Throw Blanket
Drape it casually over a sofa or chair instead of folding it perfectly. We're going for warm family Christmas, not furniture showroom.
Plaid and Tartan Pillows
You don't need six. One or two mixed with solid velvet pillows can carry the look.
Then bring in greenery and candlelight.
That's the recipe.
Velvet. Tartan. Cedar. Candlelight.
The Christmas Tree: Traditional Without Looking Theme-y

One of the things I love most about the Home Alone Christmas aesthetic is that the tree doesn't scream:
THIS YEAR'S CHRISTMAS THEME IS _____.
š
It just looks like Christmas. That's what makes it feel nostalgic.
For this look, I'd use a traditional green tree and build it with a mix of:
- red
- green
- navy
- velvet
- ribbon
- berries
- sentimental ornaments
Tree finds from the collection:
And then I'd add something personal. One of my favorite finds in this collection is the photo ornaments.
There's something very 90s Christmas about a tree that has family pictures hanging from it. Christmas trees weren't always designed solely to photograph beautifully. They told the story of the people living in the house. I'd love to see more of that come back.
The Dining Room: Tartan + Brass

If you want one inexpensive detail that completely changes a Christmas dining room, look at the chairs.
I found these tartan chair covers/bows, and they're such an easy way to bring that classic plaid into the room without buying new chairs, linens and dishes.
Then I'd keep the table fairly simple. A little greenery. Brass candleholders. Red tapers. Traditional dishes.
Done.

The candlelight does half the decorating for you.

The Mantel: More Greenery, Less Stuff

This is probably where modern Christmas decorating and traditional Christmas decorating differ the most.
We have gotten very good at putting all the things on mantels.
For this particular look, I'd pull back. Use a beautiful cedar-style garland as the foundation.
Then add a few traditional elements:
SHOP VINTAGE-STYLE CHRISTMAS ART
Maybe a stocking or two. Maybe a velvet bow. And then stop. The greenery should still be the star.
Don't Forget the Little Nostalgic Details
Ā

This is where the whole look starts feeling less like "traditional Christmas decor" and more like Christmas you remember.
Look for pieces that feel like something your family might have owned when you were little.
Not necessarily antiques.
Just pieces with a little personality.
Some of my favorites from the collection include:
SHOP THE VINTAGE-STYLE DEER PILLOW
These aren't necessarily the foundational pieces. They're the things that make a room feel collected.
Bring the Home Alone Christmas Look Outside
The exterior of the McCallister house is part of the magic too. And this is where I'd keep things extremely traditional. Greenery. Warm white lights. Red. That's really all you need.
For an entry, I love using a pair of simple cedar trees because they can stay out well beyond Christmas Day without feeling overly themed.
Then add:
You can create a beautiful nostalgic Christmas entry without covering every square inch of the porch.
What Makes Christmas Feel Like Home Alone?
It isn't one specific ornament. And it definitely isn't about copying a movie set exactly. It's the combination of warmth, tradition and layers. It's a Christmas tree filled with different kinds of ornaments. It's plaid mixed with velvet. It's greenery that feels abundant. It's candles glowing at dinner. It's family photos tucked into the tree. It's red and green without apologizing for being red and green.
Essentially:
Christmas decor that looks like Christmas.
Wild concept, I know. š
